The Nicosia Risk Forum (NRF2024) has once again brought together key stakeholders to tackle one of the most pressing challenges of our time: building disaster resilience in the Mediterranean region. With the theme “Strengthening the Disaster Resilience of the Mediterranean Region”, the event focused on solutions for safety, security, and the climate crisis.
The European University Cyprus (EUC), through its CERIDES – Center of Excellence in Risk and Decision Sciences, proudly organised this major event, which was held under the auspices of His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Dr Nikos Christodoulides. The forum was endorsed by both the Union for the Mediterranean and the CLIMPACT Panhellenic Initiative on Climate Change.
The NRF2024 brought together high-ranking policymakers, opinion leaders, administrators, practitioners, and researchers to discuss critical themes related to civil protection, societal safety, security, disaster risk reduction, resilience, and climate change. The event’s agenda featured keynote speeches, thematic sessions, and panels, showcasing a collaborative approach to solving regional challenges.
Representatives from almost all Mediterranean countries, as well as delegates from mainland Europe and the Middle East, participated in the forum. For those who missed the event, video streams of the two-day programme are available on the CERIDES YouTube channel.
The event was honoured by the presence of His Excellency, President Dr Nikos Christodoulides, who delivered a powerful keynote speech. He emphasised the importance of unity in creating a Euro-Mediterranean response to the climate crisis. Dr Christodoulides highlighted Cyprus’ proactive steps, including its commitment to the National Adaptation Strategy (2017) and the creation of a resilient civil protection mechanism.
The forum also welcomed the Cypriot Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development, and Environment, Dr Maria Panagiotou, who praised the forum’s role in raising awareness about the climate crisis’ impacts. She underlined the importance of collaboration for implementing safety, mitigation, adaptation, and resilience strategies. Dr Christos Triantopoulos, Deputy Minister of Civil Protection and Climate Crisis of the Hellenic Republic, shared Greece’s comprehensive approach to disaster risk reduction and building national resilience against climate change.
NRF2024 received extensive media coverage, including reports from Euronews Greece and several national media outlets. The ResAlliance project had high visibility throughout the event and the press corner, while the project itself was presented in a session dedicated to European projects.
The success of NRF2024 was made possible through the hard work of the EUC team, led by Pierantonios Papazoglou, EUC Project Manager and Researcher for ResAlliance and Cyprus Resilience Ambassador. He was supported by Cyprus Resilience Ambassadors Mrs Klelia Vasiliou and Mr Matthieu Jost, who played key roles in showcasing ResAlliance’s contributions.
